Assemblymember Reggie Jones-Sawyer Stresses Need for Economic Priorities and Prison Reforms
The Governor's budget announcement today is a testament to government working diligently and working through the major issues presented by a global pandemic, which remains a threat to the health of our citizens and our statewide economy.
By working together, we have weathered a major budget hit and are now in a position to start replenishing budget reserves; saving money to avoid future cuts to critical social services.
I am pleased to see the Governor's budget also proposes numerous investments in education, healthcare, housing and rental assistance, homelessness, and most importantly economic development to help get Californians back to work safely.
As Chair of the Assembly Committee on Public Safety, I thank our Governor for a number of much needed investments in criminal justice reform including funding to jumpstart rehabilitative programs in prisons that stopped due to the pandemic, transition juveniles out of state detention, and launch state investigations when officers kill unarmed citizens.
As a member of the Assembly Budget Committee, I look forward to thoroughly reviewing the proposed budget and working with my legislative colleagues to finalize a fiscally prudent budget that supports all Californians, especially those impacted by COVID-19.
