Statement By Assemblymember Reggie Jones-Sawyer on State of the State Address

For immediate release:

"First and foremost, I applaud Governor Newsom for his work on placing California on the right path that has led us safely through the pandemic and into a more normal state of existence.

Governor Newsom is correct when he stated that we continue to add resources to law enforcement agencies to deal with crime. Statistics and data show that crime is down statewide, especially property theft.

The combination of funding for ongoing public safety programs and new policies recently enacted by the state legislature have also been effective in reducing crimes.

These new laws add enhanced sentencing, upgraded charges, and immediate arrests for anyone caught participating in a criminal act that previously only called for a citation and release.

My work with the Governor has produced AB 331 that provides funding for the California Highway Patrol's Organized Retail Crimes Taskforce and AB 89, The California P.E.A.C.E. Act, providing better training and enhanced requirements for law enforcement.

California remains a model state for our country when it comes to progressive policies that strike a balance between protecting our communities and punishing those who commit crimes in our state."
