New Bill Seeks to Mitigate Harmful Use of Illegal and Dangerous Fireworks

AB 1588 Will Provide Resources to the State Fire Marshal

For immediate release:

(Sacramento – July 20, 2021) – Assemblymember Reggie Jones-Sawyer (D–South Los Angeles) co-authored Assembly Bill 1588, which seeks to provide $1.8 million in funding to the California State Fire Marshal to safely enforce existing statewide programs to prevent the use of illegal and dangerous fireworks.

"17 people were seriously injured and property was damaged during the failed fireworks detonation in our South Los Angeles community. This should never happen again. AB 1588 is an important step in resolving this type of problem," said Assemblymember Jones-Sawyer.

AB 1588 establishes the State Fire Marshal Statewide Illegal Fireworks Enforcement Action Fund in the State Treasury to provide resources to the State Fire Marshal to enforce statewide programs to mitigate the use of illegal and dangerous fireworks.

“We as a community should welcome the safe celebration of our holidays. We shall continue to do so while ensuring the safety of our children, grandmas, and even our family pets, by preventing the use of illegal and unsafe fireworks,” added Assemblymember Jones-Sawyer.
