Statement On Governor Newsom’s Budget Announcement

For immediate release:

Putting homeless issues at the forefront of our state’s recovery plan is a good first-step for our state. The ambitious $12 billion plan proposed by Governor Newsom is bold and needed.

With so many families and individuals displaced because of COVID-19, we must act to ensure that those in need of monetary assistance and temporary, or long-term, housing have access to resources in order to improve their situation and put them on a pathway to full recovery.

We must also acknowledge that funding is critical to restore clinical resources for those battling mental health issues and substance abuse. This will relieve law enforcement from entering situations they are not fully trained to handle and eliminate the practice of locking up homeless individuals who really need diagnosis, treatment, and housing referrals.

I look forward to working with the Governor on this important matter.
