Assemblymember Jones-Sawyer's Bill that Increases Accountability for State Employee Discipline Heads to the Senate

For immediate release:

(Sacramento - May 28, 2019) – Today the California State Assembly voted 51-18 to approve Assemblymember Reginald Jones-Sawyer, Sr.’s (D- South Los Angeles) Assembly Bill (AB) 1007, legislation that would protect workers and reduce departmental backlog by expediting the disciplinary process for state employees.

“When the state delays disciplinary actions on employees it results in wasted resources and state funds that result in decreased efficiency and productivity because employees must pause their careers and await adjudication of their case,” said Assemblymember Jones-Sawyer Sr. “It’s time the state breaks down the unnecessary bureaucratic systems that hinder individuals and tax payer dollars.”

AB 1007 will increase accountability in state government by decreasing the time necessary to bring forth disciplinary action from three years, to one year, except in cases of fraud, embezzlement, falsification of records, or sexual harassment.  Ensuring the highest standard of integrity for state employees means holding individuals accountable for their actions in a timely manner.

“I applaud the Assembly for voting to pass AB 1007 and look forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate to keep my bill moving through the legislative process,” said Assemblymember Jones-Sawyer.

AB 1007 now heads to the California State Senate.
