Calderon, Environmental Leaders Discuss Urgent Need to Reduce Plastic Waste
(Sacramento) - Joined by leading environmental organizations and researchers, Assembly Majority Leader Ian Calderon (D-Whittier) called for passage of his measure (Assembly Bill 1884) to reduce single use plastics and prevent plastic waste from entering the environment. “Human activity impacts nearly all parts of the ocean from lost and discarded fishing nets entangling marine mammals to spilling garbage and sewage into the ocean that eventually affects the lives of marine life, animals and humans,” said Majority Leader Calderon. “Our continued negative impact will eventually destroy our ocean, impacting not just the lives that call it home, but all of our lives as well.” AB 1884 will require dine-in full service restaurants to provide straws upon request only, thereby reducing- and eventually eliminating- some single-use plastics.
