Assemblymember Calderon Hosts Hearing About the LGBT Community and Athletics

(Sacramento) -- California State Assemblymember Ian Calderon (D-Whittier), Chair of the Assembly Committee on Arts, Entertainment, Sports, Tourism and Internet Media convened an informational hearing at the State Capitol in Sacramento. The hearing was entitled, “Homophobia and Transgenderphobia in Sports: Are LGBT Athletes Playing on a Level Field?”

Assemblymember Calderon realizes the importance of, "exploring the biases which exist against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender athletes in sports culture." Assemblymember Calderon continued by saying he wanted to examine, "the different laws, regulations and other protections designed to overcome discrimination against LGBT athletes and the effectiveness of existing measures with an eye toward strengthening the law when necessary."

Assemblymember Calderon was joined by a panel of legislators and speakers from the athletic community including Rick Welts who is the General Manager of the Golden State Warriors, Toni Kokenis who is a player on the Stanford Women’s Basketball Team, Pat Cordova-Goff who is a transgender student athlete at Azusa High School and Kate Kendell of the National Center for Lesbian Rights.
