SACRAMENTO – A bill that would offer a targeted tax incentive for those contributing to the state’s ScholarShare 529 Plan got a big boost today with the introduction of Assembly Bill 211 (AB 211). ScholarShare 529 is a state-sponsored, tax-advantaged 529 college savings plan that helps families and individuals save and plan for the cost of higher education. The plan is administered by the ScholarShare Investment Board, chaired by State Treasurer Fiona Ma.

SACRAMENTO, CA – Assembly Bill 1884, a measure authored by Majority Leader Ian Calderon (D-Whittier) which calls upon dine-in, full service restaurants to have a straws-upon-request policy, was signed into law today by Governor Brown.

“I am thankful to Governor Brown for signing AB 1884,” stated Majority Leader Calderon. “By removing the default behavior of providing straws with every drink, consumers have an opportunity to make a deliberate, small change that will minimize the harmful impacts of single use plastic straws in the environment. It’s a small but significant step forward and will hopefully set the precedent for the rest of the nation to adopt similar policies that will ensure less plastic ends up harming the environment.”

La Mirada, CA - City of La Mirada officials and Majority Leader Calderon are excited to announce the approval of $400,000 in funding for improvements to the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts. The funding was announced following final adoption of the 2018-19 State Budget and will assist in making essential upgrades to the theatre. Since the La Mirada Theatre opened its doors in 1977, patrons from La Mirada and surrounding communities have enjoyed countless high quality performances.
