Majority Leader Calderon Statement on AB 1687 District Court Ruling

Wednesday, February 21, 2018

Sacramento, California – Majority Leader Ian Calderon released the following statement regarding the District Court ruling on AB 1687.

“The purpose of AB 1687 is to establish protections and limit the harm to individuals who have their personal information published online. Even though it is against both federal and state law, age discrimination persists in the entertainment industry. The impacts of age discrimination on the careers of actors and actresses  - especially those competing for smaller roles – cannot be ignored.

The entertainment industry is a major economic driver in California.  The impulse towards ageism affects all entertainment job categories, beyond just actors, and is particularly felt by women. It is common practice for casting directors and producers to use subscription based web sites to access information about prospective employees, which often includes age information that should not be part of the hiring process.

The legislature, governor, and the attorney general all believed there was a significant state interest in addressing this issue and I still believe this bill did so properly.”
