Majority Leader Calderon to Honor Kelly Garcia as 57th Assembly District Woman of the Year

Monday, March 6, 2017

SACRAMENTO, CA – Majority Leader Ian Calderon will honor Kelly Garcia, life-long public servant, educator, and resident of the City of La Mirada, as the 57th Assembly District 2017 Woman of the Year today.

“It is my honor to recognize Ms. Garcia as the 57th District Woman of the Year,” stated Majority Leader Calderon. “Ms. Garcia has served the education community with distinction, working tirelessly to advocate for increased opportunities for students. Her passion and dedication to improving female participation in the field of STEM is especially inspiring.”

In 1987, Kelly Garcia began her career in the United States Navy as a Cryptologic Technician Maintenance Petty Officer Second Class. After five years of service, she moved to the City of La Mirada and became a key parent volunteer in Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District and served four years on the board for the La Mirada High School Cross Country Booster Club.

After enjoying her time in a school setting and being inspired by her electrical engineering experience in the Navy, Ms. Garcia earned her Bachelor of Arts in Social Science from Chapman University and her Master of Science in Education from Walden University. She later earned her teaching credentials in Multiple Subjects, Foundational Science, Biological Science and Industrial Arts and Technology Education.

Ms. Garcia began teaching science and engineering at Los Alisos Middle School in the City of Norwalk and became one of three teachers certified to teach Project Lead the Way’s (PLTW) Gateway Program, where she had a key leadership role in establishing the Math, Science, and Technology Magnet program. As the demand for STEM programs increased, Ms. Garcia began to advocate for participation in STEM courses by working with district and school site administrators.

Ms. Garcia is currently a Teacher on Special Assignment in the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District as the PLTW Coordinator, where she is able to focus on supporting the continued growth of the program in Norwalk and La Mirada schools. She is also a Master Teacher for the PLTW Gateway program, where she provides mentoring and training for prospective middle school teachers across the United States.

Most recently, Ms. Garcia implemented strategies to encourage female students to participate in STEM pathways by coordinating the Mother-Daughter Engineering Workshop and Tea, assisting with the Norwalk High School Girls Engineering Challenge, and providing professional development for district STEM teachers on strategies to improve female participation.

In 2013, Ms. Garcia received the Los Alisos PTSA Honorary Service Award and was named the 2017 PLTW Gateway Teacher of the Year.

The 2017 Woman of the Year Ceremony takes place in the Assembly Chambers of the State Capitol on Monday, March 6, 2017. It is held in honor of Women’s History Month and celebrated the contributions and unique accomplishments of women in each of the Assembly’s 80 districts.
