Statement on the Retirement of Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer

For immediate release:

The announcement by Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer that he will retire at the end of the court’s session this year creates an historic opportunity for President Biden to fill the seat with a Black woman.

Several well qualified names are currently floating about, and each would be a great addition to the high court.

Having a Black woman serve on the U.S. Supreme Court not only makes for good news headlines it will also signal a real commitment to moving our nation towards true racial and gender equality. Although tinged with politics, the immediate effect would be shifting the national discourse from historic racial angst to a positive and honest social and racial discussion on the self-evident truths of equality we preambled our nation’s founding upon.
