California State Assembly Select Committee on Justice Reinvestment to hold Hearing in Los Angeles

Los Angeles, Calif., – On February 28, 2014, Co-Chairs Assembly Member Reginald Byron Jones-Sawyer, Sr. and Assembly Member Tom Ammiano are convening a hearing of the Assembly Select Committee on Justice Reinvestment in Los Angeles. 

The purpose of the hearing is to discuss local programming practices in Southern California, which have promise towards reducing recidivism.

Assemblymember Jones-Sawyer Introduces California To Pay It Forward Pay It Back

(SACRAMENTO, CA)   – On January 9, 2014 Assemblymember Reggie Jones-Sawyer introduced AB 1456, a measure to study the popular higher education funding plan “Pay it Forward Pay it Back.”  This measure is a financial aid system where a student’s pays no upfront costs for their college education. Upon graduating they pay 2%-4% of their gross income to a state or college trust fund for a specified number of years.  

AB 1456 will require the California Student Aid Commission, the Community College Board of Governors, the California State University Board of Trustees, and would encourage the University Of California Board of Regents, to commission a study to review and make recommendations on Pay it Forward Pay it Back.

Assembly Member Reginald Jones-Sawyer Recongnizes 59th Assembly District Teacher For Outstanding Achievement

(SACRAMENTO, CA)  – On Monday August 12th, Assemblymember Jones-Sawyer recognized Manuel Nava as the Students First All Star Teacher of the Year for the 59th Assembly district.

Assemblymember Jones-Sawyer Education Reform Bills Pass State Assembly

(SACRAMENTO, CA) – Last week, the Assembly approved two important education reform bills that passed on a bipartisan vote.

AB 549 strengthens school safety by encouraging school districts to clearly define the roles of specified school faculty on campus, including police officers and mental health professionals.

Jones-Sawyer Announces $100 million in additional funding for California’s judicial system

(SACRAMENTO)  Assemblymember Reginald Byron Jones-Sawyer, Sr. (D-Los Angeles), Chair of the California State Assembly’s Sub-Committee # 5 on Public Safety, announced the committee’s approval of  $100 million  in increased funding to establish fiscal accountability and transparency of the state’s judicial system.

“This funding will help restore the access of the public to the judicial system” said Jones-Sawyer. “The lack of funding for court interpreters, court reporters, clerks and court staff to assist in everything from filing court documents to providing information, has created devastating delays of time, familial disruptions and continued fiscal hardships.”
